In October of 2013, I decided that I wanted to do something to give back to the community that has given so much to me. Naturally, I wanted to be able to give back at the best time of the year; I wanted to give back during the holidays. I wanted to do something other than your average coat, toy, or canned food drive...something unique. I decided that I wanted to collect blankets for underprivileged children in my area. This charity would be called Brooklyhn's Blankets. To intertwine my love for music and my passion for giving, I figured a Christmas concert would be perfect. With the help of my family and some musically inclined friends (all from eastern KY), we held the First Annual Brooklyhn's Blankets Christmas Concert at Betty Howard Coal Miner's Memorial Theater in Benham, KY. Admission to the concert was blanket donation and we packed the house with over 200 people in attendance. In the weeks leading up to the concert, blankets could be dropped off at various locations around the county. With all the donations from both drop off locations and the concert and also a very generous donation of over 1,000 blankets from Jones Building Systems in Halifax, VA, we had more than enough to tackle our original goal of providing blankets to 'The Backpack Program' children at Cumberland Elementary School. We were able to give to multiple school's backpack programs, head start programs, homeless shelters, and other charities in the area. Approximately $50,000 in needed items were distributed, I was so incredibly excited about the way things turned out and the heartwarming feeling it gave me was indescribable. This year we are planning to make Brooklyhn's Blankets even bigger and better in hopes to make someone's holiday season just a little bit warmer.
